Increase Your Productivity by Finding Time for Quiet

Distractions are everywhere today, and quiet is hard to come by. It’s a fact of life in the 21st century.

We live in an age of constant connection, instant access and googling everything. And as wonderful as that can be, sometimes don’t you just feel besieged with task, choices, opportunities, and information?

The on-line marketing expert Connie Ragen Green once wrote: “Choose time every day that is designated just for you.” She then went on to specifically suggest that you find time for an hour of quiet contemplation and then an hour of productive writing.

While two one-hour blocks of time may be difficult to find each day, I enthusiastically support the general idea of setting aside time every day for quiet. And here’s why I say that:

  • Self-care is the root of your successful time management. It replenishes your energy and sharpens your focus.
  • It reinforces your sense of your own power. You are in charge of your time choices, and you always have choices, no matter what. This helps overcome stress and feelings of victimization that can accompany overwhelm.
  • Giving yourself the gift of time for quiet and contemplation gets your creative ideas flowing like water from its well-spring.

BONUS TIP: As I mentioned above, finding two one-hour blocks of time in your day won’t always be possible — at least not for most of us. So, one thing I’ve found very helpful in my own life is to “think small.”

You might try looking at your time in 15-minute increments. That way you’re less likely to set aside an activity (like spending quiet time) by telling yourself you just don’t have enough hours in the day. You can nearly always find 10 or 15-minutes.

And you know what? You’ll be amazed at how thinking in these smaller time increments can change things for you. Chunking tasks down into smaller timeframes makes them that-much-more possible, whether it’s a self-care activity or something on your to-do list, Smaller steps make it easier to start, and you can’t get anywhere until you do start — so “thinking 15” is an excellent addition to your time toolbox!

How to Approach Promotional Modeling Agencies

Comments Off on How to Approach Promotional Modeling Agencies

Promotional modeling is a specific form of modeling targeted at promoting a good, service or brand. It is not to be confused with being an ambassador for a brand, but rather its primary intention is to create a positive appeal for the brand in order to boost sales.

How should you Look Like?

The harsh truth of the industry is that a certain standard or conventional body size and beautiful figure will be expected of you in promotional modeling. This is because clients would naturally want themselves and the public to associate these models positively with their brand. The restrictions are definitely much lower than that of fashion models, and the work is relatively much less stressful, however, in general, a height of above 165cm and a slender figure would be expected.

Also keep in mind when approaching a modeling agency to not wear anything too grand or fanciful. Anything that you are comfortable with, akin to a t-shirt and jeans style, is enough during your casting call or audition. This is because as a promotional model there will be a large variety of clothes you will wear depending on your client’s contract offer, hence just wear simple clothes, with simple makeup and let the clients and modeling agencies use their creativity to assess the suitability of your look with the style that they want.

Communicative Skills

Work on speaking fluently and confidently when you approach a modeling agency. As a promotional model looking good is just one aspect; a more important aspect is your ability to sell a product, service or idea. You should be able to engage with customers in conversation and convince them of your product or service’s benefits.

This becomes even more important if you can establish yourself to be a spokes model. You will sign a contract with a company and represent the company as the face of the brand. You would be appearing in advertisements, traveling around, and meeting with various people associated with your brand. You should thus be able to articulate the work you do and add value to the brand, product or service you are modeling for.

Research on the Various Industry Types

There are a plethora of industries promotional models can be in. You should identify some key industries of your interest and identify the modeling agencies that have successfully placed models in such industries. For example, if you love cars or love motor vehicles, perhaps the design, speed and other aspects of it, then your interest to work as a promotional model could likely lie in the automobile industry. You should then approach an agency by researching on their background work first and in your first interview state your passion and preferences for the industry and work you would like to be involved in.

However, if you are a model starting out don’t get too choosy. Take up the job opportunities you get first. Gain industry experience, modeling expertise and prove your worth to the agency. Soon enough you will be considered for the modeling work that you like. Your networking skills will not only land you the job as a promotional model but will also mean how fast you progress in the industry.

To Bless You Is The Best Gift I Can Give

It is the time of year for data analysis again. I just listed all the data I am responsible for collecting, evaluating and putting together for a federal report, which is due soon.

Honestly, simply looking at all the documents made me want to fall asleep.

It was like checking student’s work, scoring essay tests, and then counting the numbers. Needless to say, I don’t like raw data. If I can have someone do the hard work of processing for me, I’d be very pleased. Why? It’s because I’d rather look at the processed data, study and make sense out of it then I can create my report. That, I like.

Yes, I was in my own little world.

Anyway, It has been a habit to do positive self-talk. Every morning, I’d look at the mirror, I’d smile and I’d excitedly recite my new mantra out loud. I’d grin some more because I know one day, it will all happen. Oh, I don’t know how it will happen but I sure know it will, someday!

What I couldn’t remember though was when my transition from making negative self-talk to positive self-talk in the mirror happened.

I do like the change, though. Because if I will go back to the memory lane, it was like a switch has been turned on. All my dreams started coming true when I started believing. When I started believing in the power of my words that did it for me!

Same system, as I looked at all the piles of evaluations, attendance, observations, interviews, and all the other documents I have to process, I blessed it all.

I know I could have cursed it or said negative words or just fall asleep, heck, I could have also just put it all in the trash, but of course, I couldn’t do that, Lol.

So, I blessed it.

Just like I bless people… “I bless you for the goodness of God is in you.”

No miracle happened after blessing the documents, no angel came from the heavens to help me finish my task but what happened next, I didn’t anticipate.

I received a Facebook message from an old friend.

I haven’t spoken with him for awhile. He did say he will talk to me soon and yesterday he was ready to share his story.

I put my phone down, looked at my own little world and space of raw data, got the first pile of documents and worked on it the rest of the day.

A Filipino storyteller.
A lifelong learner.
A miracle believer.
A passionate writer.
A trainer and speaker.
A blogger.
A gem.

The Job Of Casting Talents For A Film

Comments Off on The Job Of Casting Talents For A Film

Aspiring actors undergo a tedious process in auditions before they can get the role in a commercial or film. In this kind of industry, competition is always tough. In a pool of people who fall in line for auditions, there will be hundreds who want the same role so badly just like you. Some are even seasoned and have years of experience which make them more fit for some roles as compared to newbies. To stand out in the roster and have a fighting chance in getting the role you want, it’s very important to know both the common and specific requirements of a casting agency. Agents and directors say that they can easily separate good candidates from those they can’t work with based on this set of qualities.

1. Overall look. This doesn’t pertain to your physical appearance only but your overall presence. You need to present yourself as the role you’re targeting. Your face, body, how you stand, and your expressions and gestures should be compatible with the character that the casting agencies are looking for. This will require a great amount of calculation on your part, but be flexible in order to look and become the person they are looking for.

2. Ability to act. You want to be flawless when you demonstrate your acting skills. When you’re acting, you don’t want to appear like you are acting. You need to look and sound as natural as possible. You need to be able to present yourself as the character instead of someone just playing that character – so be completely convincing.

3. Complete professionalism. Arriving on time, having your lines completely memorized, looking good, and being ready to take every instruction well are all qualities of a professional that casting directors look for.

4. Passionate attitude. This clearly indicates how serious you are about the career you’ve chosen. You need to be able to prove that you’re ready to overcome the challenges that the acting job will present, and be the character. If the directors say you need to lose weight, cut your hair, speak with an accent, learn martial arts or jump off a building, they want to hear that you can do something to make it possible

5. Confidence. This isn’t something that can be faked. You need to be able to show that you believe in yourself and can demonstrate courage, especially when asked to do something very challenging.

Top 5 Modeling Myths That May Affect Your Confidence

Comments Off on Top 5 Modeling Myths That May Affect Your Confidence

Modern times in modeling are changing, and a lot of such information that has been circulated since the past is becoming false. We reveal 5 modeling myths so that you can be more informed and more confident to come forward to be a model.

1. You need to be size zero

This might have been true in the past where skinny was frequently related to a model. Today the industry is changing and there is, in fact, a good market for plus-size models and variety of sizes is accepted. Many of the top modeling agencies have accepted that curvy models are in demand and appeal to the market.

2. You have to be very tall

There may be strict height requirements for runway and high fashion modeling that is still in place, however, most other categories ranging from commercial, catalog, print and many other forms are more open to short heights. There is even a modeling category called petite modeling these days. It is also not impossible to break into high fashion, seeing the example of Kate Moss who was one of the first models to break into to the Supermodel scene with a height around 5’6″ or 1.67m. As long as you are passionate about the industry, you can see tremendous success being a model.

3. You are too old for modeling

Heard of senior or mature modeling? Yes, age is not a barrier for modeling! Anyone can be a model as far as you have the energy and dedication to take part and have an eventful life, modeling is for you.

4. You have to take professional photographs beforehand

If you have the time and money for it, sure go ahead, but it’s not a must. Agencies don’t expect you to be a pre-made model with all the professional photos and experience in place. What they are looking for is mostly, a fresh face that has a good attitude to develop into a professional model that will sign on with the agency for as long as possible. For starters, your smartphone quality cameras will be enough for signing up. The professional photos will be taken by the agency, the way they require it.

5. It is very easy to be rich and famous

This is a very common misconception. People watch Victoria’s Secret runway, or read vogue magazines and believe that is what a model is. Well yes, but reaching those standards isn’t going to be an overnight phenomenon. Often at the start, you will have to sideline profits and invest time and energy in building your reputation and a good track record first. Once clients start recognizing you and the agency believes in your potential, that’s when you will see a steady and good income source and start getting popular.

Types of Modeling: What Type of Model Are You?

Comments Off on Types of Modeling: What Type of Model Are You?

Modeling is a business with a large variety of styles and caters to people of all ages and sizes. From the kid next door, to a college girl, or a 50-year old dad, anyone has the ability to become a model; it only depends on the style of modeling you are best suited for. Here we list the various kinds of styles that are provided by the various modeling agencies and help you discover what works for your look.

This is the where the strict requirement and the toughest standards for models are imposed. Usually fashion models taken for consideration are above 165cm, but generally people above 170cm are preferred. A slender figure is also preferred in most cases for this style. There are 4 main categories of fashion modeling namely, Runway, Editorial, Catalog and Fitness.

Runway: A person is required to do a professional catwalk in order to market a particular brand or fashion wear. Confidence and good height are required in this.

Editorial: High-end fashion magazines where a stylish fashion sense is showcased. A model should have good height, distinct looks, and a camera-friendly photogenic appeal.

Catalog: Print ads for various publications to present different types of clothing wears lines and products. Being photogenic and expressing various moods and emotions are important here.

Fitness: This type perhaps has the toughest body requirements and maintaining your body figure is an essential enduring process. The opportunities here are limited as there only certain kinds of sports and lifestyle brands that require the employment of fitness models, and as such, the competition for this modeling type is very high. But if you do get the opportunity, rest assured, your payment will be a hefty amount.

This form has very little requirements other than a marketable look and personality. Anyone with passion for modeling has a good chance at excelling in this field.

Other types are assessed for good acting and role playing, and conversational skills are Television Commercials, Television shows, trade shows, entertainment magazines, event campaigns, and website videos.

Commercial print type of modeling also falls under the commercial category, which include Corporate (E.g. Nurses, Doctors, lawyers), Fitness, Swimwear, Lingerie, Glamour (Modeling with sexual appeal, such as Maxim/Playboy types, only for those above 18 years old.), and Alternative (E.g. Rock, Gothic, Indie looks etcetera).

A specific form where one represent a brand, good or service. The modeling criteria are not very stringent on the model’s looks but rather the focus is on the ability to sell a product or idea, being able to communicate, and having an outgoing vibrant personality. Models are mostly used for an event, conventions or shows to promote their brand to consumers.

It is growing in popularity because of its industry and market relevance. This is an area modeling agencies are increasingly picking up on. People here don’t fit the conventional modeling standards, but have heavier weight and present a fuller bodily appearance.

Freelance models are not bound to any agency and instead functions like a self-agency. They would have to source for their own clients, manage their own schedule, and promote their own works by creating their own portfolio, comp card, website. They may also work for multiple agencies and not be a contractually signed model for any particular agency. This all sounds very taxing on an individual, but upon establishing the right contacts and working out a proper management routine, this form of modeling is one which may gives higher levels of flexibility and greater number of opportunities.

Body parts

This is a modeling style where specific body parts are modeled for. Most commonly the body parts requested for are hair, legs, and hands. This requires the model to maintain the beauty of the specific body part well and lead a healthy hygienic lifestyle. For example, a hand model must take the effort to wash the hands regularly, cut the fingernails properly, go for manicure if necessary, and lead a healthy lifestyle to maintain the natural skin glow. If you think you have a nice shiny and luscious hair, smooth and beautiful leg or hand, you can highlight your interest to a modeling agency.

Opportunities in Art

Comments Off on Opportunities in Art

Everything changes continuously and the art world is no difference. I develop myself as an artist, my work evolves alongside and also the art world makes progress in a haphazard way.

At the beginning of my career I was an art school graduate visiting galleries with my portfolio. I studied the gallery advertisements and called them for an appointment when I thought my work would fit in. We would meet and when we felt a match we joined forces. This resulted in long-term contacts allowing me to present new work in the said gallery on a regular basis. I did not sell much, my work was considered the abstract note next to their more commercial items, the ones that did sell. I sometimes made a special piece for an art trail in a park of a public garden. At that very beginning I even received some money once for making and exhibiting my work. I was given a scholarship which allowed me a meagre sustenance while developing myself as an artist. I thought I had it made. Sales would start growing at some point, I worked hard and my reputation would grow. People just had to get to know me a little better before they would start buying my work.

Then I had children and disappeared off the face of the earth for a couple of years. The change in my personal life was so enormous that it also changed my work. Apart from that I was in a constant state of exhaustion due to the broken nights, I was just busy all day with my little ones. They were most important at that moment. But when my daughter was two years old I was crying out to exhibit again. I had made some things during those years but smaller and much more intimate than my previous work. And I no longer cared if people would like it or not, making accommodating things had become unbearable.

I woke up in a different world. Galleries had closed, not just one but lots of them. And that was only the beginning. I was no longer a bright young talent but a woman with children. And in this depleted world of art exhibition the galleries now asked me to pay them for exhibiting my work. I felt a strong rebellion against that. (In order to create my work I already have to make considerable investments and the making of an exhibition also costs money. The driving back and forth, materials needed to exhibit the work all cost money.) Artists had been declared Cultural Entrepreneur. Nowadays it’s completely normal to pay for the possibility to exhibit.

This change in art selling locations is still going on at the moment. Online galleries are rising. Artists are putting themselves on the market, literally. Galleries are still collapsing all the time, well-known places can’t manage it anymore. The way art is treated in this country is part of the problem. According to our government art is no longer valued. Therefore many artist escape abroad. To co operations and short-term exhibitions. To fairs. To new places that had never before been considered suitable for exhibitions.

Do you like art? There are numerous artist who would love to transform your living room into an exhibition area for a weekend. Just open up your house to guests and invite your network contacts. Throw a nice party! You will end up with an exclusive exhibition in your own home, helping out an artist and create an experience for your guests they will continue to talk about for a long time.

Art is a great gift.

10. More prizes – There are sweepstakes that will have just one winner and those that offer multiple prizes. It is obvious that in case of the latter, the prizes will be of a lower value, but you can at least expect to win something. No matter how small, it will motivate you to enter more contests in future.

Leatherwork tools need to be cared for properly and maintained well. This will prolong their lifespan and reduce the likelihood of them being damaged. It will also facilitate their usage and workability. Moreover, when leatherwork tools are cared and maintained, it will save the leather craftsman from spending on the purchase of these same tools. This section describes some of the ways to care and maintain leather tools.

• Sharpening-
All cutting and piercing tools used in leatherwork should be periodically sharpened to prevent them from being blunt. The cutting edges need to be in good shape always to improve their workability.

• Re-Facing Mallet Head-
Sometimes the heads of mallets have to be re-faced or replaced for them to function effectively. These mallets may have received several bruises causing the head to either split. They have to be replaced immediately to avoid them from hurting the leather craftsman and others who may be present in the studio.

• Oiling Metal Parts of Tools-
Metal tools are liable to rust or corrosion. Therefore when not in use, they have to be oiled and wiped with a clean rag to avoid corrosion. Also, metal tools and tools with metallic parts should be kept free from water and other liquors since they trigger rusting and corrosion.

• Dressing Punch Tools-
Punch tools that meet stubborn or hard surfaces and therefore bend or tilt should be dressed or straightened so that they can work well.

• Washing-
Containers, bowls, and spoons for mixing dyes, adhesives and other solvents have to be thoroughly washed to free them of the stains of these liquors. Also, gloves and aprons should also be washed to keep them tidy and neat.
